Natural, Fishing & Large Ponds are ideal for people who have a larger property, love the outdoors, and love being by water. The term “Natural ponds” mainly refers to ponds that are clay based and do not have a liner. “Fishing ponds” refers to ponds that are purposely stocked with fish like bass for the main purpose of fishing. “Large Ponds” is a loose term that we use to describe any pond that has a surface area of a half acre or more. Whenever we plan the construction of a large pond we take the time to consult with our clients regarding the plants and animals that will live there. Large ponds will have more robust ecosystems and will attract a variety of animals from the surrounding environment, including birds, frogs, deer, insects, salamanders, butterflies, and turtles.
Natural, fishing and large ponds are a large body of water constructed by humans which hold water by using clay or a membrane. Believe it or not, the vast majority of large ponds in our area are man made. Although manmade, these ponds are referred to as being “natural” because they are made to look natural, they use no chemicals for filtration, they are clay based, or they have natural streams/springs feeding into them.
While we do construct large ponds, much of our work with them comes from renovation and restoration. Many of these ponds rely solely on rain for fresh water, and have little to no circulation. These ponds often become stagnant and create breeding grounds for mosquitos. Having no way to absorb or remove excess debris, the water becomes toxic, brown, and unsuitable for aquatic or plant life. Our team has numerous methods for dealing with these issues, most of which not only fix water quality issues, but also add to the pond aesthetically. Find our more about these solutions on our Natural Ponds page under the services section.
Contrary to popular belief, large ponds if built correctly are actually easier to maintain and use less power than smaller ones. We utilize nature and are able to mimic how real natural ponds are filtered, while adding a few handy features of our own. Using aquatic and shoreline plants, we are able to effectively filter not only the water in the pond, but runoff from storms as well. We use low powered aeration systems to gently circulate nutrient rich water from the bottom of the pond up through the plants. The plants then absorb these nutrients and effectively filter the water. While that is one end of the spectrum, we have also added gigantic waterfalls and streams with rushing water, for customers who want a more dramatic effect. Each of these ponds are unique, and can be designed exactly to the client’s needs. Whether it’s being able to walk out your back door to go fishing, turning your yard into a lakeside retreat, attracting beautiful wildlife, having an eco-friendly alternative to a pool, or even just adding value to your property, having a large pond constructed can provide all of these benefits and more.
