Nestled in the heart of Peddler’s Village in Lahaska, PA, just steps away from Fitz’s Fish Ponds’ New Hope Retail Store, lies a now beautiful natural pond, that has become a centerpiece of the the infamous walking mall. Unfortunately, this wasn’t always the case. The previous pond brought many struggles and was not able to be the focal point that it now is. When the FFP Team moved in, they were itching to bring life and beauty back to the pond in the Village.
The original pond faced significant challenges. At only 18 inches deep, it was unable to sustain fish for more than a month, often falling prey to predatory herons and overgrown vegetation. Fitz’s Fish Ponds addressed these issues by deepening the pond to three feet, creating a healthier environment for aquatic life. To deter predators, straight walls that are reinforced with large boulders were constructed. These boulders not only enhance the pond's aesthetics but also serve as a functional barrier. What's more, existing driftwood and boulders were repurposed to retain the natural charm of the space.
Today, the pond features six high-quality Japanese-imported koi, ranging from young nisai to mature sansai. These koi were sourced from renowned breeders, including Shintaro, Maruhiro, Marushin, and Ikarashi. Visitors can experience the pond firsthand by feeding the koi during weekends and special events, adding an interactive and educational element to the feature.
The design of the pond incorporates innovative enhancements. While preserving the shape and characteristics of the original waterfall, a second waterfall was added to improve water flow and visual appeal. The pond is equipped with advanced filtration systems, including an under-gravel grid leading to a concealed OASE filter hidden beneath a faux rock. Two Atlantic waterfall filters balance the water flow, while a UV sterilizer eliminates algae and pathogens. A large PS7000 skimmer, integrated seamlessly with a faux rock, removes debris, ensuring pristine water quality.
Plantings around the pond add vibrant color and natural beauty. Hardy perennials such as cardinal flowers, variegated Japanese iris, and potted cattails provide lasting greenery, while aquatic flora like the Wambisa lily with its striking yellow flowers and red leaves enhance the pond’s surface. Lemon mint, planted in waterfall pockets, not only adds greenery but also serves as a natural bug deterrent. Peddler’s Village contributes to the charm by adding festive seasonal decorations and annual plantings, ensuring the pond reflects the beauty of each season. It is especially decorated for the holiday season, where they add lights throughout the entire village including the pond display.
The transformation of the Peddler’s Village pond highlights Fitz’s Fish Ponds’ ability to combine innovative design with natural aesthetics, creating a sustainable and visually captivating water feature. Whether they are feeding koi on a leisurely weekend or admiring the vibrant blooms during a festive event, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in this aquatic sanctuary. Visit Peddler’s Village today and experience this successful renovated pond for yourself... it's truly one in a million!
