Rotala macrandra 'Magenta,' also known as Rotala macrandra "Narrow Leaf" or Rotala macrandra "Florida," is a popular aquarium plant recognized for its vibrant red coloration and narrow leaves. This plant is a mutation of the standard Rotala macrandra and is commonly found in the U.S. aquarium trade. While 'Magenta' is slightly less demanding than the wider-leafed form of R. macrandra, it still requires medium to high light intensity, CO2 injection, and careful nutrient management. Insufficient light can cause the lower stems to blacken and die, while the plant's red coloration intensifies under high phosphate levels. Maintaining nitrate levels between 5-15 mg/l and phosphate levels between 1-2 mg/l, along with adequate iron, is crucial to preventing pale leaves and promoting healthy growth.
This variety of R. macrandra is known for its upright growth habit, with many lateral shoots developing over time. When the shoots grow too long, they often spread along the water surface, producing new lateral shoots at each node. Propagation is straightforward and can be done by cutting the top or lateral shoots and replanting them in the substrate, where they will quickly form new roots. Like other red Rotala species, 'Magenta' forms compact growth, especially when given optimal care, making it a beautiful addition to aquascaped tanks.
Rotala macrandra 'Magenta' is highly prized for aquascaping due to its stunning red hues and potential to add bright yet balanced color contrasts to aquarium layouts. Its upright and slender growth makes it an excellent background plant, especially in smaller aquariums where it won’t overwhelm the space. Aquarists can use this plant to create eye-catching focal points and enhance the overall aesthetic of their tanks with its striking red color and graceful form.
