Tancho Kohaku – A Symbol of Elegance and Rarity

Tancho koi are known for their distinctive single red (Hi) marking on the head, creating a striking and highly sought-after look. The name "Tancho" comes before the variety name, so these koi are referred to as Tancho Kohaku, Tancho Sanke, or Tancho Showa. Traditionally, Tancho describes a perfect red circle on the head, but the term is now often used for any round marking of any color that appears on a koi’s head, such as in Tancho Ochiba, which features a brown spot.

Kohaku, with its brilliant white (Shiro) body and bold red (Hi) patterns, is considered the foundation of all koi varieties. It’s no surprise that the most expensive koi ever sold was a Kohaku, reaching an incredible $1.7 million! As a member of the prestigious Gosanke group, alongside Sanke and Showa, Tancho Kohaku remains a favorite among koi enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

We personally travel to Japan to select each koi from the most reputable breeders, ensuring only the best quality fish are brought to the U.S. Our selection process guarantees access to some of the finest koi available.

Before shipping, all koi undergo a strict four-week quarantine period, where we perform extensive health checks, including slime coat swipes and parasite screenings. Any necessary treatments are provided to ensure each fish arrives in perfect health.

• Free Shipping is valid for orders with a subtotal exceeding $199 and all orders will be shipped via UPS. Items purchased for delivery after 3pm will ship the following day. Items purchased for delivery after 3pm on Friday will ship Monday.
• Koi Fish only ship Monday- Wednesday. For orders placed after 3pm on Wednesday, the order will be shipped the following Monday.
• For Motor Freight (LTL) Shipments, oversized or heavy items unsuitable for traditional parcel delivery will be dispatched through a motor freight carrier, as indicated on the product page. Once the carrier receives your order, they will reach out to arrange a delivery time. An individual aged 18 or older must be present to sign for the delivery.
• You may return or exchange an unused or unopened item for a refund (excluding shipping and handling charges) within 30 days of purchase. Following 30 days, the item may be returned in exchange for a store credit. Used chemicals and fish food are not returnable. In addition, all sales on Japanese Koi are final and non-refundable.
