Echinodorus, commonly known as Sword plants, are a popular genus of aquatic plants prized for their striking, sword-shaped leaves. These plants are heavy root feeders, thriving in nutrient-rich substrates, and benefit from periodic root tab supplementation every two months. Sword plants are prolific propagators, sending out runners that extend into the water column and sprout new plantlets along the stem. These baby plants can be trimmed off and replanted, making it easy to expand your aquatic garden. While Sword plants are hardy and easy to care for, they require a large aquarium with ample space to grow, and they flourish in bright lighting conditions.
Regular maintenance, including pruning brown or dead leaves, helps ensure healthy growth. Mature Sword plants are also a favorite breeding site for mated angelfish, who may lay their eggs on the broad, sturdy leaves. Overall, Sword plants provide a stunning focal point in your tank while offering benefits to your aquarium's ecosystem. With proper care, they will thrive, offering both beauty and function for your aquatic setup.
