Ludwigia repens is a classic aquarium plant native to the southern United States, Central America, and the Caribbean, where it thrives along the edges of rivers, lakes, and ponds. In the wild, it often forms dense, trailing populations in shallow water, with shoot tips emerging above the surface. Due to its natural variability and tendency to hybridize with other Ludwigia species, identifying different regional forms can be challenging. Some cultivated varieties, such as Ludwigia mesakana, feature round leaves with enhanced coloration, while Ludwigia repens 'Rubin' is believed to be closely related to Ludwigia glandulosa rather than a true L. repens.
This species is one of the easiest red aquarium plants to maintain, thriving even under moderate lighting conditions without requiring CO2 supplementation. Under strong lighting, Ludwigia repens adopts a sprawling growth pattern, developing numerous lateral shoots. Its reddish hues become most vibrant when provided with ample light and optimal nutrient levels. To intensify its red coloration, maintain low nitrate levels (around 5 mg/L), high phosphate levels (1.5–2 mg/L), and a sufficient supply of iron and micronutrients.
Propagation is straightforward—simply cut lateral or top shoots and replant them in the substrate. If the base is left intact, it will continue producing new lateral shoots. As the plant reaches the water’s surface, it transitions into a trailing growth habit, further increasing its density. Ludwigia repens is an excellent choice for aquascaping, adding striking red highlights to the midground or background of any aquarium.
