The Nymphaea zenkeri "Red," commonly known as the Red Tiger Lotus, is a captivating aquatic plant native to the African tropics. Found in stagnant waters like lakes and ponds, this species is highly popular in the aquarium hobby due to its stunning appearance and availability. The plant grows from a tuber-like rhizome, producing both submerged and floating leaves, characteristic of water lilies. As a large plant, reaching up to 20 inches in height and width, the Red Tiger Lotus makes a striking centerpiece in larger aquariums, with its leaves varying from reddish-green to deep red, often adorned with brown stripes and spots. These colors are influenced by genetics and light intensity, making it a visually dynamic addition to any tank. In optimal conditions, it may even produce beautiful, fragrant white flowers that bloom only at night.
The Red Tiger Lotus requires a well-lit environment to thrive and prefers a nutrient-rich substrate to support its vigorous growth. While this fast-growing plant is generally undemanding, it tends to produce long-stalked floating leaves that can block light for other plants in the tank. To maintain balance in the aquarium and prevent overcrowding, it’s recommended to trim these floating leaves regularly. However, if you aim to encourage flowering, allowing the floating leaves to remain is essential. The plant's ability to adapt to various conditions makes it versatile, whether grown for its submerged leaves or to produce blooms.
Occasionally, the Red Tiger Lotus may shed all its leaves, but aquarists should not be alarmed. As long as the tuber remains healthy and firm to the touch, the plant will regenerate after a period of dormancy. Young plantlets often break off from the mother tuber, making them easy to propagate. These new plants develop their own tubers and can be grown independently, while the mother tuber may continue to produce new shoots. With its vibrant colors, large size, and ease of propagation, the Red Tiger Lotus is a must-have for aquarists looking to add a dramatic focal point to their tanks.
