Anubias barteri, named after the plant collector Charles Barter, is one of the most popular and widely used aquarium plants due to its ease of care and robust nature. Native to the shady, fast-moving rivers and rivulets of southeastern West Africa, Anubias barteri often grows on large rocks or fallen tree trunks, either partially submerged or fully submerged. It is commonly found in the aquarium trade and is easily distinguishable from A. barteri var. nana by its longer leaf stalks. This versatile plant thrives in a variety of aquarium setups, making it a top choice for both beginners and seasoned aquarists.
Known for its tolerance to less-than-ideal conditions, Anubias barteri can thrive in very low lighting (as low as 0.25 W/L) and doesn’t require CO2 supplementation. However, when provided with higher light and CO2, it grows faster and produces larger, more vibrant leaves. Water pH and hardness are not critical, making it adaptable to a wide range of water conditions. A moderate to strong water current is beneficial for this plant, as it helps reduce spot algae, particularly in high-light environments. Additionally, higher phosphate levels (around 2 mg/L) can promote healthier growth and support flower formation. Though Anubias barteri grows slowly, it is the fastest-growing species within the Anubias genus, making it a reliable plant for long-term aquascaping.
Anubias barteri is well-suited for large aquariums, where it can be used in the middle or background to provide a contrasting texture to softer plants like mosses or fine-leaved stem plants. Its leathery leaves make it highly resistant to grazing by plant-eating fish, such as cichlids and goldfish. This hardy plant can be grown either as an epiphyte, attached to hardscape elements like rocks or driftwood, or planted in the substrate—just be sure the rhizome remains above the gravel to prevent rot. Anubias barteri is also an excellent choice for paludariums, as it can grow partially emersed. Anubias barteri is a beautiful, resilient plant that thrives in a wide range of aquarium conditions, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits for aquascaping.
