Bolbitis heudelotii

Bolbitis heudelotii, commonly known as African Water Fern, is a striking aquatic fern native to the fast-flowing rivers and spray zones of tropical West Africa. Frequently found growing alongside Anubias barteri, this plant naturally attaches itself to rocks and driftwood using fine, strong roots. Its unique, bottle-green, pinnate leaves add a wild, naturalistic feel to freshwater aquariums, especially in biotope or jungle-style aquascapes. Like Anubias and Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus), Bolbitis grows from a creeping rhizome, which should always remain above the substrate to avoid rot.

This slow-growing plant is best suited for aquascapers looking for a hardy, low-maintenance centerpiece with texture and flow. Bolbitis heudelotii produces a new leaf every 1–2 months and thrives when tied to hardscape elements in areas with strong water movement, such as near a filter outlet. While it can survive in a variety of water conditions, it performs best in soft, slightly acidic water with added CO₂ for optimal growth. Regular trimming and propagation by rhizome division—ensuring at least three leaves per division—encourages healthy development. In rare cases, baby plants may also sprout directly from older leaves.

With its feathery, semi-transparent leaves and classic fern-like appearance, Bolbitis heudelotii brings depth and contrast to any aquascape. • For Motor Freight (LTL) Shipments, oversized or heavy items unsuitable for traditional parcel delivery will be dispatched through a motor freight carrier, as indicated on the product page. Once the carrier receives your order, they will reach out to arrange a delivery time. An individual aged 18 or older must be present to sign for the delivery.
• You may return or exchange an unused or unopened item for a refund (excluding shipping and handling charges) within 30 days of purchase. Following 30 days, the item may be returned in exchange for a store credit. Used chemicals and fish food are not returnable. In addition, all sales on Japanese Koi are final and non-refundable.
