  3. Plant the portions into the substrate using tweezers, then watch them grow!

Glossostigma elatinoides, commonly known as Glosso, is a sought-after aquarium plant native to Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. This low-growing species thrives in both emersed and submerged environments, such as bogs, riverbanks, and lakeshores. It gained widespread recognition in the aquascaping world after Takashi Amano introduced it to Japan in the 1980s, using it to create stunning nature aquariums with lush, carpet-like foregrounds. Today, Glosso is one of the most popular foreground plants for aquarists around the globe, admired for its ability to form dense, vibrant green carpets in a well-maintained tank.

To cultivate Glossostigma elatinoides successfully, it requires sufficient light and CO2 levels. A minimum light intensity of 0.5 watts per liter is necessary for healthy growth. Under optimal conditions, it will quickly spread via runners, covering the aquarium floor in a relatively short period. However, inadequate lighting can lead to leggy growth and poor overall appearance. In addition to light, Glosso thrives with proper nutrient levels, requiring nitrate (5 mg/l), phosphate (0.5 mg/l), iron, and essential micronutrients. Deficiencies in any of these elements can result in stunted growth, yellowing leaves, or even transparent spots.

When purchasing Glosso, you will typically receive the emersed form. To plant it in your aquarium, place groups of three to four stems together and wait for the submersed growth to begin, which generally occurs within two weeks. Once the submersed leaves appear, they can be trimmed and replanted for quicker propagation. Be sure to fully submerge the stems, allowing only the leaf tips to remain visible. With the right conditions—ample light, CO2, and nutrients—you’ll achieve a beautiful, dense carpet of Glossostigma elatinoides in just a few weeks.
