Hygrophila pinnatifida stands out from other aquarium Hygrophila species due to its unique pinnatilobed to pinnatisect leaves, which are highly decorative. The submersed form displays a striking color pattern, with upper leaves in shades of brown to olive green, featuring light yellowish patterns, while the undersides are a deep burgundy red. These characteristics give it an appearance reminiscent of Cryptocoryne species. When grown submersed, H. pinnatifida produces both upright shoots and runner-like creeping stems that can attach to rocks or driftwood, making it versatile in aquascaping.

This plant performs well in moderate light but responds better to higher intensity, which promotes more compact growth. Regular trimming of shoot tips helps maintain its bushy form, while a good supply of nutrients and CO2 is recommended for optimal health. H. pinnatifida is particularly susceptible to potassium deficiencies, indicated by small needle-like holes in older leaves, so a balanced nutrient regimen is important. The plant has a relatively shallow root system and can thrive in various substrates, including sand or gravel.

Propagation is best achieved through its lateral runner shoots, as top shoot cuttings tend to develop poorly. Plants with established roots or those grown emersed adapt faster in aquariums compared to rootless cuttings. The growth rate varies depending on lighting, nutrients, and CO2 levels. Under high light and sufficient macronutrients, the plant can grow rapidly, with upright shoots potentially reaching the water surface. In open tanks, it may even grow above the waterline and produce flowers.

• You may return or exchange an unused or unopened item for a refund (excluding shipping and handling charges) within 30 days of purchase. Following 30 days, the item may be returned in exchange for a store credit. Used chemicals and fish food are not returnable. In addition, all sales on Japanese Koi are final and non-refundable.
