Ludwigia senegalensis is a stunning and relatively new addition to the aquarium hobby, admired for its striking brick-red coloration and intricate leaf patterns. Originally introduced as Ludwigia sp. "Guinea," this species is native to various regions across Africa, from Senegal to Angola and the Zambezi River in Zambia. It thrives in diverse wet environments, both emersed and submerged, and can be found at elevations of up to 1,100 meters. When grown emersed, it develops a creeping growth habit, whereas submerged specimens produce upright stems that create an eye-catching display in planted tanks.

To achieve the most vibrant colors and healthiest growth, Ludwigia senegalensis requires intense lighting and should be placed in well-lit areas of the aquarium. Proper nutrient supplementation is crucial, as deficiencies can lead to blackened or deteriorating shoot tips. For best results, micronutrient fertilization should be doubled from standard dosages, and macronutrient levels should be maintained at approximately 20 mg/L nitrate and 2–3 mg/L phosphate. While it can be planted in clusters, ensuring adequate spacing will promote fuller growth and prevent lower leaf loss. Strong water flow and soft water conditions further enhance its development.

Despite its moderate growth rate, Ludwigia senegalensis produces numerous lateral shoots, making propagation simple—just trim and replant the cuttings in nutrient-rich substrate. Its deep red hues create a striking contrast against green aquatic plants, making it an excellent choice for aquascaping. Whether used as a focal point or blended into a vibrant plant arrangement, this species adds a bold splash of color to any aquarium layout.
