How To Use:
- Carefully take the plant out of the cup and thoroughly rinse off the growing media (agar) in a container of water.
- Split the plant in 6-8 portions using your fingers or sharp scissors. Definitely use sharp scissors to separate any small foreground plants.
- Plant the portions into the substrate using tweezers, then watch them grow!
Monosolenium tenerum, often described as a larger, darker version of Riccia fluitans, is a versatile liverwort ideal for aquariums. Unlike Riccia, it stays on the substrate, forming lush cushions rather than floating. It thrives under diverse conditions but performs best with high light, CO2 supplementation, moderate temperatures, and ample phosphate levels. Its easy propagation by dividing cushions makes it a popular choice for aquascapers seeking a low-maintenance plant with a rich green hue.
To maintain its form, tie Monosolenium tenerum to rocks with nylon thread or tuck it between other plants, as it does not naturally anchor itself. Initially, it may appear untidy when tied, but it soon grows into attractive tufts. Regular trimming is essential to prevent overgrowth, which can cause lower sections to decay. When trimming, it’s recommended to remove the rock from the tank or carefully siphon loose fragments, ensuring shrimp aren’t trapped in the cut-off pieces. Proper maintenance prevents it from becoming invasive and helps it retain its aesthetic appeal.
This plant also thrives in moist, emersed conditions, making it suitable for terrariums, waterfalls, or water trickles, where its broader thalli grow flatly. In aquariums, its dark green color contrasts beautifully with lighter plants like Eleocharis parvula or Glossostigma elatinoides. It can be used in the foreground or middle ground, either as scattered tufts for a natural look or as a full carpet in larger tanks. Monosolenium tenerum adds texture and depth to any aquascape, offering flexibility and visual interest.
