Rotala macrandra 'mini' is a delicate, fast-growing stem plant native to India, often regarded for its attractive foliage. While it's admired for its beauty, it can be challenging to grow, particularly the more delicate cultivars like the mini or variegated types. The plant thrives in soft water with low KH levels, ideally below 3 dKH, and requires stable CO2 levels for optimal growth. While the hardier green varieties can adapt to moderately hard water, the more fragile mini cultivars perform best in very soft water conditions. CO2 levels must be kept consistent, as fluctuations can lead to stunted growth, especially in sensitive varieties.
Lighting and fertilization are crucial for the health of Rotala macrandra 'mini.' High-quality lighting with a strong red/blue spectrum and higher PAR values promote the best coloration, particularly for the red varieties. Adequate fertilization is key to maintaining vibrant color and healthy growth. This plant benefits from both root and water column feeding, but over-fertilizing the water column, especially with high nitrate levels, can cause tip stunting. For optimal results, it's advised to rely more on enriched aquasoil and root feeding while keeping water column fertilization lean.
Regular pruning and stable growth conditions are essential for maintaining the plant's lush appearance. Due to its rapid growth, propagation is straightforward—simply cut off the top 3 to 4 inches of the stem and replant. While the green varieties can withstand several cycles of topping, the more delicate cultivars may require more attention to prevent deterioration of lower leaves. To prevent tip stunting, ensure that CO2 levels remain steady, and avoid excessive water column fertilization, especially in harder water conditions.
For success with Rotala macrandra 'mini,' it’s important to focus on stable water parameters, consistent CO2 levels, and balanced fertilization. The plant grows best in aquariums with soft water, lower KH levels, and higher light intensity, which enhances the red coloration. With proper care, this plant makes a beautiful and striking addition to any aquascape, especially when grown in a well-maintained middle or background position.
