Rotala wallichii is a striking stem plant known for its vibrant red shoot tips when provided with optimal lighting. Originating from the soft, slightly acidic waters of Southeast Asia, this plant is ideal for creating colorful, densely packed groups in the middle or background of your aquarium. It thrives in high light, requiring at least 0.5 watts per liter to achieve its intense colors, along with a balanced supply of nutrients and CO2 fertilization. With its delicate branching, Rotala wallichii rewards aquascapers with foliage that transitions from bright pink to orange and deep red, with leaves reaching over 0.8 inches in diameter.
Best suited for well-maintained aquariums, it requires a nitrate level between 0.4–0.6 ppm and a phosphate content of 0.04–0.08 ppm to thrive. Regular pruning may be necessary to keep it within your desired tank size, and it can be propagated easily by cutting and replanting the top or lateral shoots, which quickly grow new roots. Rotala wallichii is a favorite in Nature Aquaria and Dutch-style tanks, providing an elegant contrast to other plants, and should be planted in groups of 3–5 stems for the most beautiful, dense display.
