Vallisneria gigantea (also referred to as Vallisneria gracilis in the aquarium trade) is a striking, fast-growing background plant native to North Australia, prized for its long, ribbon-like light green leaves and graceful, flowing appearance. While it reaches only about 6 inches (15 cm) in its natural habitat, this adaptable aquatic plant can grow up to 28–31 inches (70–80 cm) tall in the aquarium, making it an excellent choice for filling out the midground to background of larger tanks. As it matures, Vallisneria gigantea spreads easily by runners, forming lush, dense curtains that create a natural backdrop and provide shelter for fish and shrimp. Its soft, waving foliage adds movement and contrast to aquascapes, pairing beautifully with both stem plants and hardscape elements.

For optimal growth, Vallisneria gigantea prefers moderate to high lighting (approximately 0.4 watts per liter or higher) and thrives in stable water conditions between 68–82°F (20–28°C). While it can tolerate a range of aquarium setups, stronger lighting helps maintain compact, healthy growth, and prevents excessive leaf elongation that can shade other plants. Supplementing with liquid fertilizers (especially iron) and CO₂ injection will significantly enhance growth rate and overall vibrancy. Once established, this hardy species is easy to maintain and propagates readily, making it a reliable and visually impactful choice for both beginner and experienced aquascapers looking to create a full, natural-looking planted aquarium.

• Koi Fish and Live Plants only ship Monday- Wednesday. For orders placed after 3pm on Wednesday, the order will be shipped the following Monday.
• For Motor Freight (LTL) Shipments, oversized or heavy items unsuitable for traditional parcel delivery are not eligible for free shipping. There items will be dispatched through a motor freight carrier, as indicated on the product page. Once the carrier receives your order, they will reach out to arrange a delivery time. An individual aged 18 or older must be present to sign for the delivery.
• You may return or exchange an unused or unopened item for a refund (excluding shipping and handling charges) within 30 days of purchase. Following 30 days, the item may be returned in exchange for a store credit. Return shipping cost are covered by the customer and some items returned will result in a restocking fee.
• To receive a refund for Live Plants, you must email ecommerce@fitzfishponds.com with the image of the item in the original packaging for review.
• To ensure Live Plants have the best chance to arrive without issue, it is recommended to select next day air or two day shipping options.
