ABOUT US

THE ART OF AQUASCAPING

Aquascape/ˈä-kwə-ˌskāp/ n: an arrangement of elements (such as plants and rocks) in an aquarium intended to create the appearance of a natural aquatic environment.

Aquascaping is the epitome of art meeting science. The aquarium becomes a diorama created by carefully arranging wood, rocks, and live plants into a microcosm of nature. It not only takes the eye and skill of an artist, but knowledge of plant species and how they grow underwater. Battling algae becomes a masterful skill. Balancing light, CO2, water flow, and water chemistry keeps everything harmonious and flourishing.

Aquascaping was created and popularized by the late, great Takashi Amano in Japan. His nature aquariums are famous worldwide, and his legacy still lives on today through Aqua Design Amano and the legions of hobbyists that were inspired by his work. Aquascaping competitions attract the most dedicated hobbyists, boasting thousands of entries from all over the world.

FFP AQUARIUMS & AQUASCAPING

Our ties to Japan are strong, so naturally we have gravitated toward nature aquariums, a style of planted aquarium that originated in the same home country as our beautiful koi fish.

Our stores are a sleek homage to stores found in Asia and Europe.  Healthy plants, healthy animals, education, and customer service are our priorities. If your aim is to create a natural environment for your fish, and are just beginning the journey of growing plants in your aquarium, we are happy to help. Our experienced staff can provide one-on-one guidance to ensure your success in starting and keeping an aquarium thriving. Our growing gallery of display aquariums give hobbyists inspiration to create their own works of aquatic art, and can also be purchased as-is. Our social media pages are the best way to find information about upcoming seminars on popular aquascaping topics, view the growing collection of gallery aquariums, and get up-to-date stocking information.

From guiding beginners through setting up their first aquarium, to providing dedicated hobbyists with a home base, to becoming the best source for livestock and materials, we aim to be the hotspot for all planted aquarium enthusiasts.

FISH OF THE MONTH

EMBER TETRA

Hyphessobrycon amandae

Origin: Amazon Basin, Brazil

Max Adult Size: 0.75”

Minimum Aquarium Size: 5 gallon

Temperature: 68 - 82F

pH: 5.0 - 7.0

The Ember Tetra thrives in a heavily-planted setup with a dark substrate, floating plants, driftwood, and decaying leaf litter, which promotes microbe colonies beneficial for fry and releases tannins. Gentle filtration is sufficient, and the fish will accept dried foods but should also be fed small live or frozen foods like Artemia and grindal worms. Ember Tetras are peaceful and best kept with similarly-sized, non-aggressive tankmates. They naturally form schools, and a group of 8-10 individuals will display more vibrant color and behavior.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

ANUBIAS 'PETITE'

Growth Form: Rhizome

Growth Rate: Slow

Location: Epiphyte

CO2: Low

Light: Low

Care: Easy

Anubias nana ‘Petite’ is a small, hardy aquatic plant popular in aquascaping. Like other Anubias species, high light intensity can be detrimental, so plant anubias in areas with low light. Anubias ‘Petite’ is an epiphytic plant, and thrives when attached to stones or driftwood. If planting in substrate, do not bury the rhizome or the plant will die. As long as you follow that one rule, this plant is highly resilient, tolerant of various water conditions, and doesn’t require CO2 supplementation. It’s a perfect choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.
