Rotala rotundifolia, also known as Rotala indica, is a beautiful aquarium plant native to Southeast Asia. The plant's name derives from the Latin meaning "the plant with the round leaves," which refers to its marsh variety. However, the more common form of this species features long, narrow leaves and 6-12 inch stems that are 0.8-1.2 inches wide. Unlike many other Rotala species, it is relatively undemanding, thriving under medium light conditions. However, to achieve its vibrant red hues, strong lighting (around 0.66 W/l) is necessary. Under optimal conditions, it can grow horizontally along the substrate.
Rotala rotundifolia is a fast-growing plant that produces side shoots, becoming compact and bushy. Its dense growth often results in the lower leaves being shaded from light, so regular pruning is recommended to maintain its appearance and promote healthy growth. It thrives in water with low nitrate levels (around 0.2 ppm) and high phosphate and iron/micronutrient levels, which help enhance its vivid colors. Fertilizer dosing can influence color variations, ranging from pink to yellow hues.
This plant is easy to propagate through cuttings taken from lateral or top shoots, which can be replanted directly into the substrate. The plant will quickly produce new shoots, growing densely in a bushy form. If it reaches the water's surface, it will continue to branch out. Rotala rotundifolia is best suited for the middle or background of an aquarium, where its striking colors can serve as an accent. During warmer months, it can even be cultivated outdoors, and in temperate climates, it can survive mild winters in ponds.
