Bacopa australis is a versatile and easy-to-grow aquarium plant native to southern Brazil, not Australia as its name might suggest. This attractive stem plant typically grows between 4–12 inches tall and 1–2 inches wide, making it an excellent choice for the foreground or midground of planted aquariums. Under the right conditions, Bacopa australis can develop a creeping growth habit, forming a lush, light green carpet that adds depth and texture to any aquascape. In higher lighting, its delicate leaves can take on subtle reddish hues, enhancing its visual appeal.
Known for its adaptability, Bacopa australis thrives in a wide range of aquarium conditions, from cooler setups below 60°F to warmer tanks up to 90°F. It grows well under medium to high lighting and does not require CO2 injection or heavy fertilization to succeed, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. However, the addition of CO2 and nutrients will promote faster growth, denser foliage, and more vibrant coloration. Compared to similar species like Bacopa caroliniana or Bacopa monnieri, this variety features softer, finer leaves and a more relaxed, bushy growth pattern.
Propagation is simple and efficient; just trim healthy side shoots and replant them in the substrate to quickly establish new growth. Regular trimming is recommended to prevent overly dense growth, which can block light from reaching lower leaves. Whether used to create a soft carpeting effect or as a delicate accent plant, Bacopa australis is a reliable and visually striking addition to any freshwater planted aquarium, offering both beauty and ease of care.
