Distinctive Shusui Coloration

Shusui are well known for their attractive blue coloration and clean, smooth body appearance. As a Doitsu variety, Shusui have largely scaleless sides that emphasize their body color and distinctive markings. Their blue tones create a refined look in the water, making them a popular choice for koi keepers who appreciate unique and traditional Japanese varieties.

Signature Dorsal Scale Pattern

One of the defining features of Shusui is the orderly row of dark blue scales that runs along the dorsal line. This distinctive marking provides contrast against the smoother body and gives the variety its recognizable appearance. Combined with the blue coloration and Doitsu characteristics, the dorsal scale row creates an elegant pattern that distinguishes Shusui from many other koi.
