Hygrophila serpyllum is a unique and increasingly popular aquarium plant from India, prized for its low-growing, creeping habit and vibrant green coloration. Unlike most Hygrophila species, this plant spreads horizontally, producing thin yet durable stems that root at the nodes and form a dense, carpet-like mat. Under optimal conditions, it typically grows to about 1–1.2 inches in height, though it can reach over 2 inches in lower light as it forms a broader, bushier structure. Its small, rounded leaves—measuring approximately 0.4–0.6 inches—resemble those of pennywort, adding a soft, textured look that enhances natural-style aquascapes. Hygrophila serpyllum is ideal for foreground to midground placement, where it fills in gaps and creates a lush, cohesive layout.

This easy-to-grow aquatic plant thrives in a wide range of water parameters, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. It prefers moderate lighting and benefits from CO₂ supplementation, along with a steady supply of macro and micronutrients for optimal growth and density. Higher light encourages tighter, creeping growth, while moderate light can produce a slightly taller, bushier form. When planted in small clusters spaced apart, it will gradually spread into a seamless carpet over time. In emersed conditions—such as paludariums or wabi-kusa setups—Hygrophila serpyllum develops upright shoots with delicate white to pale blue flowers, adding an extra layer of visual interest. With its adaptability, manageable growth rate, and rich texture, this plant is a standout choice for creating depth, contrast, and a natural aesthetic in any aquascape.
