Rotala macrandra, a stunning stem plant from India, has long been a favorite among aquarists for its delicate, vibrant foliage. However, it has a reputation for being more challenging to grow than its hardy relative, Rotala rotundifolia. With its larger, more fragile leaves, this plant is best suited for the midground or background of an aquarium. When provided with optimal conditions, Rotala macrandra readily produces lateral branches, forming dense, bushy growth. Its delicate nature requires careful handling, as rough contact can easily damage its leaves.
To thrive, Rotala macrandra prefers soft water with low alkalinity (below 3 dKH), though hardier cultivars can tolerate moderately hard water. CO2 injection is highly recommended for healthy growth, as this species is sensitive to CO2 fluctuations, which can lead to tip stunting. While lower CO2 levels encourage compact, slower growth, higher levels result in larger, more robust plants with increased branching. Due to its rapid growth rate, consistent fertilization is essential to prevent lower leaf deterioration. Propagation is simple—cut and replant the top portion of the stem while allowing the base to sprout new shoots.
