How Big Do Koi Fish Get? Size by Type and Age

How big do koi get? Most domestic pond koi grow to 12 to 15 inches, quality Japanese koi typically reach 22 to 26 inches, and jumbo bloodlines can pass 36 inches. Koi put on most of their length in their first three years, then keep growing slowly for life. How close your fish come to that potential depends on genetics, pond size, water temperature, water quality and diet.
| Koi type | Typical adult length | Typical time to reach it |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic koi | 12 to 15 inches | About 2 years |
| Japanese koi | 22 to 26 inches | About 3 years |
| Jumbo koi | 30 to 36 inches or more | 3 to 5 years |
| Record koi ("Big Girl," United Kingdom) | About 4 feet and 91 pounds | Exceptional, not typical |

Koi grow fastest when young and slow down after their third year. Typical lengths for well kept Japanese koi:
| Age | Common name | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 year | Tosai | 3 to 8 inches |
| 2 years | Nisai | 8 to 14 inches |
| 3 years | Sansai | 12 to 20 inches |
| 4 years and older | Yonsai and older | 16 to 26 inches or more, growth slows |
Actual growth varies with bloodline, pond size, temperature and diet.
Six factors decide how large a koi grows. Genetics and age set the limits, and the pond environment and diet decide how close a fish gets to them.
Koi grow fastest when water holds steady in the upper 60s to mid 70s Fahrenheit, because their metabolism and appetite rise with temperature. Below about 50 degrees, digestion slows sharply, feeding should taper off, and growth essentially pauses through a northern winter. Wide daily temperature swings stress koi and slow growth even in summer.
Clean, well oxygenated water is the foundation of growth. Ammonia and nitrite, even at low levels, suppress appetite and stunt koi, so a koi pond needs biological filtration sized to its fish load, steady aeration and regular water testing. Partial water changes keep dissolved waste from building up between tests.
Koi can only grow as large as their environment allows. A common guideline is a pond of at least 1,000 gallons and about three feet deep, with added volume for every adult fish. Crowded ponds build waste faster and growth slows across the whole collection. If you plan to keep Japanese or jumbo koi, size the pond for their adult length, not the size they are when you buy them.
Koi eat more and grow faster in warm water, so match food to the season. In summer, a high protein growth food fed several times a day, in portions koi finish within about five minutes, supports steady growth. In spring and fall, switch to an easily digested wheat germ food, and stop feeding when the water drops below about 50 degrees.
Genetics sets the ceiling. Koi from jumbo bloodlines are selected by established Japanese breeders over generations for body size and volume, which is why Japanese koi typically outgrow domestic stock in the same pond. Good care helps any koi reach its potential, but it cannot push a fish past its genetic limit. Our koi team selects Japanese koi directly from established breeders, and bloodline is the first thing we look at when a customer wants fish that will grow large.
Koi grow fastest when young, often adding 6 to 8 inches in their first year. Growth slows after the third year, but healthy koi keep adding length and girth slowly across a lifespan that commonly runs 25 to 35 years.
Not exactly. Koi do not shrink to fit a small pond, but crowding and poor water quality slow growth and can stunt fish permanently. A larger, well filtered pond gives koi the room and water quality they need to reach their genetic potential.
Young koi kept in warm, clean water often grow 6 to 8 inches in their first year. Growth stays fast through the third year and slows after that.
Young koi can be kept indoors temporarily, but they outgrow almost any home aquarium within a year or two. For long term health and full size, koi belong in an outdoor pond of at least 1,000 gallons.
Well kept koi commonly live 25 to 35 years, and some live much longer. Because they keep growing slowly through adulthood, long lived koi are often the largest fish in a collection.
